Diagnostic characters
Pronotum concealing much of forewing in repose, often with longitudinal rugae; some genera with prominent anterior or dorsal median horn or suprahumeral horns. Forewing with vein M separate or fused basally with Cu (exceptions: Hemiptycha, Mendicea, and some Phormophora in which M is fused with R basally but gradually diverges near middle of wing). Hind wing without r-m crossvein, veins R4+5 and M1+2 confluent for short distance near apex and divergent more distally (exceptions: Aphetea, Incolea, and some Mendicea and Phormophora in which R4+5 and M1+2 are confluent but do not diverge distally). Metathoracic femur without longitudinal row of cucullate setae. Female second valvulae relatively broad and of moderate length.
