Overview
With 26 species, Metcalfiella is the largest genus within the tribe Hoplophorionini (McKamey and Deitz 1991c; McKamey and Deitz 1996a). Members of this genus exhibit parental care of their eggs and nymphs. Some species are pests of avocado, cacao, or coffee. Metcalfiella species occur widely in the Neotropical region (but not the West Indies), and one species is reported also from Nearctic Mexico.

McKamey and Deitz (1991a) reviewed the taxonomic history of Metcalifella, a genus long confused with Hoplophorion and Ochropepla.

Distribution
Neotropical and Nearctic regions. Although not reported from the West Indies, species of Metcalfiella occur widely in the rest of the Neotropical region, especially in humid montane regions. Nearctic records are limited to M. monogramma (Germar) from Mexico (Queretaro and questionably Baja California).
