Wallace (2011a) discussed this genus in his overview and morphological phylogenetic analysis of the Smiliini, Telamonini, and their relatives.
Taxon history
Though formerly assigned to either the tribe Telamonini or Smiliini, the New World genus Tropidarnis is at present of uncertain position (incertae sedis) within the subfamily Smiliinae (Wallace 2011a).

Neotropical and Nearctic regions: Panama, Neotropical Mexico, and southwestern United States.

Diagnostic characters
Pronotum lacking median anterior horn (or projection) and longitudinal rugae. Metathoracic tibial row I present as simple, single row of cucullate setae (row I irregular or double in Smiliini, Telamonini, Antianthe and Hemicardiacus).
Host plants
Fagaceae: Quercus (both nymphs and adults have been collected from oak: Wallace 2011a).
