Overview
The genus Kaikaia, based on the species K. gaga from Nicaragua, is unplaced with the subfamily Centrotinae (Morris and Dietrich 2020a). Its relationships to other New World centrotine tribes and the Old World tribe Beaufortianini remain unclear. This treehopper, named in honor of the pop icon “Lady Gaga,” stirred considerable interest in the popular media. Kaikaia is currently only known from the highly threatened and fragmented tropical dry forests of western Nicaragua.
