Wallace (2011a) discussed this genus in his overview and morphological phylogenetic analysis of the Smiliini, Telamonini, and their relatives.
Taxon history
Although formerly associated with the tribe Smiliini, the New World genus Antianthe is at present of uncertain position (incertae sedis) within the subfamily Smiliinae (Wallace 2011a).

Distribution
Neotropical and Nearctic regions: widely distributed in South and Central America, and the Caribbean, also reported in the southwestern United States and Florida (McKamey 1998a; Deitz and Wallace 2012a); introduced to the Oceanic region: Hawaii, Niue, and possibly Tonga (Wallace et al. 2016a).

Diagnostic characters
Pronotum highly elevated and foliaceous; humeral angles enlarged, long and often narrowed with anterior margin contacting lateral margin of eye. Similar to Hemicardiacus except pronotum less highly elevated and humeral angles not as long.

Asteraceae: Verbesina, Veronica; Fabaceae: Erythrina; Lauraceae: Persea; Rubiaceae: Coffea; Solanaceae: Acnistus, Capsicum, Cestrum, Nicotiana, Solanum (Wallace 2011a).
Behavior
Members of this genus are subsocial (with maternal egg guarding and ant-attended nymphal aggregations) and multivoltine (Wallace 2011a).
