Taxon history
Prior to 1961, the older family group names Combophorides Amyot and Serville, 1843, and Heniconotini Goding, 1892, were rejected because their respective type-genera Comobophora Germar and Hemiconotus Stål were considered to be junior subjective synonyms of Heteronotus Laporte, 1832, and the family group name Heteronotini Goding, 1926, had won general acceptance. Moreover, according to the International Code of Nomenclature, the later name is to be conserved with the date of the rejected name. Consequently, the valid name for this subfamily is Heteronotinae Goding 1926 (1843) , with the tribe Heteronotini Goding 1926 (1843) (Deitz 1975a).
