Diagnostic characters
Pronotum simple, horned, foliaceous, inflated, umbellate, or some combination of these; posterior process various, from reduced and terminating just over scutellum to extensive and terminating beyond abdominal apex, not entirely concealing scutellum. Forewing R2+3 fused with R1; only1 r-m crossvein present. Metathoracic femur without dorsal row of cucullate setae (exception: Smerdalea). Male abdominal tergum IX with lateral plate fused to pygofer basally and lacking posteroapical hook or lateral plate absent.
